In a non-blind test I did a while back I compared an E10 (non-K) and an Apple dongle on my speaker amp (not ideal in itself) driving my then DT 880. That being said, the E10K performs certainly not better, maybe worse (about 82dB SINAD) than just your mainboard sound chip or the GSX1000 (wich should be on par with your mainboard audio). Well, don't overestimate the importance of the DAC, it's the least decisive part of the chain, while the the transducer is without question the most important.

Am I feeling right, is a DAC upgrade advisable in my situation, or should I just focus on getting better headphones with my current setup? I am not really planning on getting any more pricier headphones than the above, but I have a feeling that I am still not getting the best quality out of my currrent headphones.

I am planning to get all of them in the future (HD 6XX as a direct upgrade to the HD559, K702 as an upgrade to the AD700X, and DT880s just to try out a different kind of sound signature, something new). I am looking at the HD6XX, AKG K702, and Beyerdynamic DT880 PROs. But the question arises.wouldn't I get a bigger upgrade in sound quality with buying new headphones instead? Is the FiiO e10k good enough as a dac, or an upgrade would be advisable? Should I give some time the GSX1000, and use that as a DAC, before going on an upgrade? Right now I want to be sure that the DAC is up to par with the ATOM, so I am thiking about buying the Topping E30. I also have a Sennheiser GSX1000 laying around, which I can use as a DAC too, altough subjectively I feel like the FiiO e10k (as a DAC) with the ATOM has a wider/bigger soundstage, than the GSX1000+ATOM combo (interestingly it was the other way around without the ATOM). My setup currently looks like the following:įiiO e10k (as DAC) + JDS LABS ATOM AMP + Sennheiser HD559/Audio-Technica AD700X. Amazon UK does have the Topping MX3 available although there seem to be mixed reviews on the MX3 and Zen DAC.I am new to the forum, and as a beginner in this hobby it was refreshing to see objective measurements, because sadly we don't have a lot of opportunity to listen to different gear before buying them in my country.

Some further research brought my attention to the Fiio K5 Pro but I can't find that reliably here in the UK. I've been looking at the ifi Zen DAC which I can get from Amazon. So despite the E10K having lower output impedance than the Soundblaster Z headphone amp (which I've found is 22Ohm) it hasn't got low distortion? Hmmm in that case what soundcard would you recommend, whatever I buy will eventually be used on the new build in a few months so I'll just look at it as a future investmentĪlso of note, I'm in the UK and products seem to be very hard to come by here. I'm of the assumption that lower output impedance is preferable then? some very basic research searching on Google seems to suggest that. Reseating the Soundblaster Z didn't do anything. I'm building a new machine in 2-3 months so I could potentially wait and see how I get on using onboard audio on the new build.

Onboard audio is "Intel HD Audio via Realtek ALC889 with 8-channel support " - I'm using a pretty old PC at the moment, motherboard is around 10 years old.

That said, more traditional controller solutions have their problems, too. Which is all good and well as long as it works, which it doesn't always (reliably).

Ironically, a lot of current models are actually using USB sound chips with PCIe USB controllers, I suspect for software compatibility reasons. Not necessarily cheaper but another option.Ĭoncerns that an internal card can't be any good have been around for decades but a lot of them are actually unfounded. Do you have any decent onboard audio available by any chance? You may get away with using that and an external amplifier only. If it has to be external, I'd definitely spend a bit more, or consult the used market. The E10K is a very basic DAC/HPA, not sure it even is at the level of your old card (output impedance may be low, but distortion not so much, and this quite irrespective of load impedance). Or perhaps the MAX97220 headphone amp IC needs a reflow, or even the control chip.įirst of all I would just try reseating the card though, it's running entirely on +3.3 V and the power and ground pins on PCIe x1 aren't exactly super numerous. Not sure what's up with that, the electronically inclined may want to ask an ESR meter for the condition of the 4 electrolytic caps dotted around the control chip and perhaps the one near the PCIe connector as well, maybe one of them has gone high ESR and is upsetting things. doesn't seem to be entirely uncommon for them. I suspect your SB Z may just have started to fail.
